Kit of the Day
So the big holidays are only a couple of months away....yikes! I want to do something really different for a holiday card, but my creative mojo seems to be on sabbatical. Thankfully Lie Fhung has come up with the perfect thing. Her Card Calendar Kit Series 1 and Series 2 will make excellent holiday cards that will be yearlong keepsakes. Series 1 is 4x6 and series 2 is 5x7. Even cooler is the fact that she has also included 3 quickpages for each series so that you can do double sided printing. How cool is that. But wait...there's more! There are also 3 important date markers so you can highlight dates that people should remember. What else do you need? Finally, they are simply gorgeous!!!!!
Something in Hom74's Pumpkin Tasting touched my heart this morning. There is such a sense of tranquility, of time standing still, of wonder. I sat there staring at these two simple images and thought about how our minds slowly form as babies. Of course she tasted the pumpkin. So did Gracie. I bet 90 of babies lick their first pumpkin. That is part of the process of exploring their world. Yes, from this very simple and elegant and somewhat timeless layout I went off on a reverie about brain development and the beauty of babyhood. I love the selective coloring on the b/w photos. Simply lovely.
Friday Interview Series - Michelle Coleman
While I was at Memory Trends I made certain I stopped by the Fancy Pants booth to see the handiwork of some of our digital girls gone paper. I was immediately in love with Michelle Coleman's Clair De Lune line. Of course I somehow missed seeing any of the actual designers while there, but I made sure to hook up with Michelle upon returning to have a chat about paper lines, life as co-owner of ScrapArtist and everything in between.
DP: What was it like when you first heard the news that they wanted to turn your designs into paper? Overall how has the experience of designing a paper line been and how does it differ from your digital designing?
MC: I was so excited!! Before I started digital scrapbooking, I was a die-hard paper scrapper. So designing my own paper line felt more like a dream than reality. And to see the final printed product, what a treat!! Designing paper for print is completely different than designing for the digital world. You have to think about how your design will translate during the printing process, so the way I use texture, the pantone colors I choose to work with all have to be carefully planned so the final look is cohesive. When I design for ScrapArtist, I am more likely to experiment, and try new techniques. The process is more freeing for me because there is not as much pressure to create something. I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work with Fancy Pants. Jodi (the owner) is wonderful, and allows Nancie and I both such wonderful creative freedom! It has been a fantastic experience!
DP: I know that you were a paper scrapper before discovering digital. How did you first learn about the digi world and what led you to make the switch? Do you every pick up your paper supplies and play?
MC: I first heard about Digital Scrapbooking through an article by Rhonna in Legacy Magazine. It was Christmas Eve 2004, And after reading the article, then staying up all night to research it online; I was HOOKED!! I had dabbled in Photoshop before, and even when I paper scrapped I always had to use my computer for journaling or printing titles. Digital was just the perfect fit for me.
I would like to tell you that I break out my paper supplies every now and then, but honestly, I just haven't had the time! I am still saving them all though for that rainy day when I have no deadlines or other projects in the works ;)
DP: All of your kits have a somewhat shabby feel to them, but that is where the similarity ends. You have covered just about every color in the universe in your work and a huge variety of topics. How do you keep your designs fresh? Do you start with any kind of theme or idea in mind or do you just play until something emerges?
MC: Well, sometimes I have a design or a theme when I start, but usually my designs end up taking on a life of their own! I just go where the design takes me, I love losing myself in the process, it is so freeing!
DP: I know ScrapArtist has recently undergone some struggles with the server move. Is owning your own store everything you thought it would be? How do you manage to run the store, design, promote, submit layouts and parent? Are you some kind of superwoman or do you have a system?
MC: First I just have to say that I am very thankful that I do not have to run ScrapArtist alone, Man! That would be a hairy job! Partnering with Nan was one of the best decisions I have ever made! And I am very fortunate to have some fabulous ladies in my corner that help with day to day responsibilities of running the site. But I love the freedom that ScrapArtist allows me, It is a wonderful situation and I feel that I do have the best of both words! As far as fitting in everything else ;) I am still working on successfully cloning myself , but until then ;) I do have a pretty good system down (most days that is!) My husband is a huge help, I couldn't do this without him! His job allows him to be home most weekday mornings until noon or so; So that gives me the mornings to work uninterrupted. Uninterrupted time is bliss :) It is amazing what I can get done without having to entertain the kiddies.
Then when Brenna gets home from school I can focus on being a mommy, homework, dinner, etc.. Then once the girls are both in bed I design into the wee hours of the night. I have always been a night owl; so it just works for me!
DP: You have been published in all of the major scrapping magazines. What does it feel like to get those layout requests? Do you have any advice for people who have yet to be published?
MC: It is very rewarding, I love seeing my layouts in print. I work hard at what I do and it's nice to get noticed here and there. I think the best piece of advice on getting published would be to pay close attention to what calls are open. You have to work several seasons ahead. Yes, you have to plan a little! :) I do not submit nearly as much as I used to; because I just haven't had the time to devote to it as much, but if you keep at it, and submit everything, (Not just your favorites!) You will be more likely to submit that winning combo that a publisher is looking for. And do not be discouraged if something you love doesn't make it into print! It doesn't mean that your layout wasn't wonderful, it just wasn't what they were looking for at the time.
DP: So are you the type of designer that falls in love with whatever their latest kit is or do you have some old friends that will always be favorites?
MC: Hmm, I think probably both, My all time favorites are Clair de Lune which is now a paper line through Fancy Pants, and Boho Chic.. Both of these collections I made totally just for me and I think that they both really reflect my personal style pretty well.
DP: You've got a few template products up at ScrapArtist. What do you think led to the explosion of templates in our industry? Do you think they will continue to be such a huge force or is it a passing fad?
MC: I think I think anytime you can make scrapping quicker and easier for someone you will have a successful product. Everyone wants designer pages in their books but they may not always have the time to make them. I think they will be around for to stay!
DP: So you are on my deserted island with every electronic gizmo known to man and about a dozen other designers, LOL. What else do you need to be in scrapping and designing heaven?
MC: Oh. That would be heaven! :) Probably just need my diet Dr. Pepper and my tunes!
DP: Fluff time. Favorite TV, Movie, Book, Music and Food?
MC: Favorite TV : Grey's Anatomy, and Boston Legal :)
Favorite Movie: Oh, I love myself a good movie.. I always have such a hard time choosing a favorite though! I love The Red Violin, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion just to name a few!
Favorite Book: Anything by Wally Lamb, Alice Sebold, Elizabeth Berg and Clive Barker :)
Favorite Music: My newest favorites are K.T. Tunstall and Natasha Bedingfield, My long time favorites are: Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan and Jewel
Favorite Food: I love all food ; ) But my favorite places to eat lately are Rumbi Island Grill (Hawaiian food) and the Cheese Cake Factory, Yum!
DP: Finally, leave us with a favorite quote.
MC: "Every day the choice is presented to us to live up to the spirit that is in us or deny it." ~Henry Miller
Isn't she cool? Michelle has a couple of really cool new kits out. Holiday Romance is a great luxurious Christmas kit and Sweet Evangeline has a great feminine holiday flair.
